See the Eternal Flame, pay your respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, or go straight to the rooftop for a sensational view of the Paris skyline. Whatever you choose, you’ll soon realize there is more to do at the Arc de Triomphe than just looking at it.
Widely considered a neo-classical masterpiece, the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile, or the Triumphal Arch of the Star, has been at the very heart of Parisian life for almost two centuries. Napoleon’s remains passed under it before interment. Victor Hugo’s body was displayed here as well. With such a rich and seemingly endless history, you absolutely must see it if you wish to return home triumphantly.
Napoleon commissioned the Arc de Triomphe shortly after his victory at Austerlitz and was inspired by the great arches of ancient Rome. Don't miss the relief sculptures at the base of each of the four pillars, ornate soldiers in a frieze around the top, plus the names of 128 battles and 558 generals.
The monument that took 30 years to build is an absolute must-do when in Paris!
