Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife hop on hop off loop starts at Plaza de España, the big square beside the port. Buses run every 25 minutes from 9:30 AM to 6:15 PM, and the whole loop takes around 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on the weather and traffic conditions. It's an open-top double-decker bus, with commentary in 11 languages.
Hop off at the Palmetum to walk through a seafront palm garden laid out on the city's old rubbish tip. Parque García Sanabria is the main city park, and the Mercado Nuestra Señora de África is the place for lunch. At MUNA, the island's nature and archaeology museum, you can see Guanche mummies, and the Casa del Carnaval has its own stop. The Auditorio stop, for Santiago Calatrava's concert hall, is also included in the list.
The other stops are the bus station, Tres de Mayo, the stadium, Plaza Weyler, Plaza Los Patos and the Military Museum.
Puerto de la Cruz
This loop is shorter, with almost seven stops in about an hour, starting at Martiánez on the seafront next to Lago Martiánez, César Manrique's seawater pools. The catch is frequency: buses run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, but only every 60 to 90 minutes. The other stops are the Jardín Botánico, planted in 1788, the Mirador La Paz viewpoint, the Mercado Municipal, Loro Parque, Playa Jardín and the bus station. Commentary comes in eight languages.
Staying in the south?
Neither Tenerife hop on hop off bus runs in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas. Allow over an hour by car to Santa Cruz and a little longer to Puerto de la Cruz. By public transport, TITSA buses 110 and 111 go from Costa Adeje to Santa Cruz, and line 343 goes to Puerto de la Cruz, but only a few times a day.
If You’re Spending the Day in Puerto de la Cruz: With around seven departures a day, pick two or three stops and plan around the timetable. Do the hilltop stops, the Jardín Botánico and Mirador La Paz, on an early bus.
If You’re Driving into Santa Cruz: Show your bus ticket at El Corte Inglés for free parking and a 10% reward card for the store.
Travelling with children? The Santa Cruz bus has its own kids' commentary in English, Spanish, German, French and Italian.
You Can Visit at Carnival Time: Events can change the route on the day, so ask the driver which stops are running when you board.
The north of Tenerife is greener and more traditional than the resort coast. La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage city founded in the 1490s, is a short tram ride from Santa Cruz. It isn't on either Tenerife sightseeing bus route, but its grid of colonial streets is worth the trip. Santa Cruz's own beach, Las Teresitas, was laid with sand shipped in from the Sahara.
Mount Teide, at 3,715 m, is the highest point in Spain and sits between north and south. The national park around it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Teide Observatory stands on the Izaña ridge at 2,390 m.
In the hills above Puerto de la Cruz, look out for a guachinche: a family-run place, often in a garage or a barn, that serves the owner's own wine with a few home-cooked dishes.

Yes, but not across the whole island. In Tenerife, Canary Islands, hop on hop off buses are run by City Sightseeing in Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz, on separate 24-hour tickets.
No. For Teide, book a day tour. The Mount Teide tour with a cable car takes about 7 hours, or you can choose the guided national park tour with transport.
Yes. Cruise passengers can join the tourist bus at Plaza de España, the first stop, next to the port. From the north pier, it's about a 15-minute walk. Ships at the south pier berth further away, and shuttles usually drop passengers near the square. A full loop takes 1 hour 20 minutes.
A 24-hour adult ticket costs from around €20 in Santa Cruz and from around €22 in Puerto de la Cruz.
No, you need a ticket for each. To get between them, take TITSA bus 102, or allow about 40 minutes by car.
Loro Parque has its own stop on the Puerto de la Cruz route. The bus ticket doesn't include entry, so book a Loro Parque ticket separately.
