Overview

“Death is nothing, but to live defeated and inglorious is to die daily.” – Napoleon Bonaparte.

Before his actual demise, Napoleon died daily for over 5 years while in exile on the island of St. Helena. Nowadays, tourists flock from all over the world to see his tomb in the Dôme des Invalides. Encased in red quartzite and resting on green granite are the remains of one of the most influential military strategists and tacticians in history. And, with him inside the Musée de l'Armée are thousands of examples of the weapons, supplies, and gear that lifted him to power. Vive la France!

When most people think of a monument, they think of a statue or perhaps an obelisk. At, Musée de l'Armée, there is a modern monument for the digital age unlike anything you have ever seen: The Charles de Gaulle Monument. When you visit the monument, you are given an infrared device to tailor your experience. The videos shown in Multi-Screen Room depict the life of Charles de Gaulle, Founder of the French Fifth Republic. Encircling the Multi-Screen Room is The Ring, a glass loop onto which the events of the 20th Century are projected. Finally, the three separate rooms of the Permanent Exhibition encourage visitors to examine the life of Charles de Gaulle from three distinct perspectives. Très moderne!
