Who knows what goes on behind the walls? Wonder if you ever think about that when you visit a famous house, manor or castle? If only those walls had eyes!
Take a visit to John Knox house, and those walls reveal plenty of drama, trials and tribulations of Scotland’s turbulent past. These walls may be medieval and all alone along the Royal Mile (it’s the only house of its kind left) – but their secrets are something to behold. Across three floors, you’ll learn about past inhabitants - Mary, Queen of Scots for one!
This house is a history lesson in waiting. Add in the story of John Knox himself, and you have an experience that will please old and young alike. Knox, a Scottish minister, theologian, writer and leader of the Reformation was only here for a while (he died in 1572) but thanks to his association with the place it was rescued from demolition in the 1850s.
Good to know - Time-capsules to mark this rescue was found in the walls during excavation and you can see one in the bookshop.
