Your journey takes you across the Austro-German border, along the Königsee River Valley and through breathtaking landscapes to Obersalzberg.
Now the most exciting part begins. From Obersalzberg you will be transported to Eagle's Nest by both elevator and bus. The adventurous bus ride along the steep rock walls and deep gorges takes about 20 minutes and provides magnificent views. The buses are equipped with special engines and brakes to transport you safely through the treacherous terrain.
On the ascent, you will see splendid views up to the “Hoher Goll” and across the snow-capped peaks of the Bavarian Mountains. From the 365 foot (111 m) elevator you enter the Eagle's Nest at an altitude of 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), a truly memorable experience.
For your Bavarian Alps and Eagle’s Nest Private Tour you can be picked up from your hotel in Salzburg City Center or alternatively you can meet the car at Mirabellplatz, whichever is most convenient. You will be chauffeured by a multi-lingual driver/guide speaking German & English. Depending on the size of your party, you will travel in a mini-van (8-seats).
Leaving the spires of Salzburg behind, you will head towards the mountains. After passing the hunting castle of Hellbrunn, you will cross the old Austrian-German border into Bavaria. Drive on through picture post-card scenery, along the Konigsee River Valley, and through the Bavarian Alps, their lower slopes dotted with pretty farmhouses.
You will arrive at Obersalzberg, at the foot of Eagle’s Nest mountain. Obersalzberg is a place of great historic significance, being the home and headquarters of Adolf Hitler in World War II.
Drive up the mountain to the bus terminal. Then change to special coaches equipped to take you up the rest of the ascent to a brass elevator that transports you to the “Eagle’s Nest” – perched on top of a crag and surrounded by precipitous slopes.
On the way up, you will have splendid views across snow-capped peaks to the Hoher Göll, a 2,522 m (8,274 ft) high mountain and the highest peak of the Göll massif, which straddles the border between Bavaria and Austria.
The aptly named Eagle’s Nest was built as a teahouse for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday. The construction was a considerable feat of engineering owing to its mountain-top location. A restaurant now stands on the site.
From Eagle’s Nest you will have magnificent views of the snowy tops of the Bavarian Alps and the surrounding countryside.
At the end of the trip you will be driven back to Salzburg and will be dropped back at your hotel or, if you prefer, at Mirabellplatz.
