Activity Overview

Ever imagined what it would be like to live under an exploding volcano? Like its more well-known neighbour Pompeii, Herculaneum was also destroyed by the ash, rock and pumice. Unlike its famous neighbour, a visit to Herculaneum will give you more riches and treasures to uncover and discover.

See the old arena, as big as a city block, and The Palestra (Main Hall) which was home to a giant statue of Hercules, hence the town's name. If you explore with an audio guide (€8) you'll get a great sense of the history.

Although in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, this is one roman ruin that’ll take you back in time and into a city better preserved than its famous neighbour. It’s a magic time-freezer!
