At the start of your Historical Walking Tour – Seville you will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the oldest part of town to meet your guide. You can also join the tour from C/ Zaragoza, nº1, 41001 Sevilla.
First stop on the guided walking tour will be the Reales Alcazares (Royal Palace). This historic masterpiece dates from the 14th century and was originally a Moorish fort. It provides a perfect example of the distinctive ‘mujedar’ style – an attractive combination of Islamic and Christian influences. The upper levels of the Palace are still used by the royal family as their official Seville residence.
As you tour the Palace, you will see brilliantly colored and crafted Moorish mosaics and exquisite plasterwork. You can also enjoy the enchanting gardens with their palm, cypress, myrtle, mulberry, and citrus trees set among courtyards, glittering pools and fountains.
The tour includes Seville’s magnificent Gothic Cathedral, on the site of a former mosque. Built to demonstrate the might of Christian Spain after the defeat of the Moors, this vast cathedral is the third largest in Europe after St Paul’s in London and St Peter’s in Rome.
The interior of the Cathedral is lavishly decorated in gold. Among many features of interest are the world’s largest altarpiece with 45 carved scenes from the life of Christ, the 15th century stained glass windows and the tomb of the explorer Christopher Columbus.
Two parts of the original mosque can still be seen in and around the Cathedral: the Moorish entrance court and the Giralda, originally a minaret, converted into a bell tower.
The Giralda is one of Seville's most enduring icons. You can ascend the tower by way of cleverly designed ramps. It’s a long climb to the top – 100 meters (330 feet) but you will be rewarded with stupendous views of the city and the Cathedral roofs.
The excursion also includes a visit to the Santa Cruz Quarter. This charming district was the former Jewish neighborhood of the city. Discover the enchantment of its narrow winding streets, flower-filled courtyards, fountains and small squares full of orange trees.
The walking tour lasts 3 hours.
