Discover the treasures of Cordoba on this delightful day tour. Once the leading city of a Roman province, Cordoba was later the capital of Moorish Spain. In its heyday in the 10th century it was one of the most advanced cities in the world and an important center of culture and learning.
Cordoba’s rich history has bequeathed a legacy of magnificent sacred buildings. One of the most famous is the Mezquita – a combination of cathedral and mosque. Another is the splendid Synagogue decorated with delicately carved stucco and Hebrew texts and set among the winding medieval lanes of the old Jewish quarter.
Cordoba is a very special place and you will have time on the tour to enjoy its special ambiance. Wander the narrow streets, relax in the beautiful little squares, have a drink in a traditional bar and lunch in one of its fine restaurants.
At the start of your Cordoba Sightseeing Tour from Seville you will be picked up from your hotel in a minibus. (On some occasions train travel may be substituted for the minibus – see Additional Information).
The drive from Seville to Cordoba will take approximately 1 ½ hours. Upon arrival in Cordoba, you will set off on a walking tour with your guide.
Visit the Church-Cathedral of Cordoba. Also popularly known as the Mosque of Cordoba or the ‘Mezquita’, it was built during the 9th and 10th centuries. When the Christians re-conquered Cordoba in 1236, they built a cathedral right in the middle of the mosque. A jewel of Hispano-Islamic art, the Mezquita, with its 850 columns, double arches and Byzantine mosaics, is a legacy of the Ummayid Caliphate in Spain.
Continue walking a little to the north-west of the Mosque-Cathedral along the city walls and enter the Jewish Quarter or ‘Judería’. The Jewish Quarter is the best-known part of Cordoba's historic centre, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984 and is one of the largest in Europe. Its medieval streets have a distinctly Moorish flair to them.
You will stop at Cordoba’s splendid Synagogue one of only three ancient synagogues left in Spain. This delightful building dates from the 13th century and is exquisitely decorated in the typical Andalusian (or ‘mujedar’) style.
After this you can meander down some of Cordoba’s most famous streets such as Callejón de las Flores, where the white walls are covered with flowers from top to bottom.
Following your guided walk there will be around 2 hours for lunch (payable direct) and shopping.
At the end of the day you will be taken back to Seville and dropped off back at your hotel at around 1830h (6:30pm).
