Overview

Travel back in time with this fascinating three-hour walking tour of Jewish Prague. Few cities can boast a richer Jewish culture than stunning Prague, where Josefov, the Jewish Quarter, is packed with interesting sites. During this private tour discover the only Central European Jewish Quarter that survived the Holocaust, the birthplace of Franz Kafka, and the triumphs and tragedies of this resilient community.

Wander through Josefov encountering traditions, customs and stories at every turn. See the oldest preserved synagogue in Europe, which some say holds the bones of the Golem, a mythical monster made of clay brought to life. The Old New Synagogue is one of six in the quarter, each holding priceless Torah scrolls and beautifully decorated by skilled craftsmen. Visit several of them and then continue exploring the ghetto to discover the Kafka monument and the Jewish Town Hall with its quaint little tower.

Then head to the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe, dating back to the 15th century when it was in use for 300 years. Here the huge demand for graves meant that people were buried twelve deep in places. As you explore the lively and beautiful Jewish Quarter you’ll also learn about the persecution of the Jews, the horror of the Pogroms, and the tragic fate of the Czech Jews taken to the concentration camp at Theresienstadt, never to return. Rich in memories and both sombre and joyful in turn, the Jewish Quarter is testament to a remarkable people, who have overcome tremendous suffering with dignity, courage and hope.
