Overview

Explore a city of silver and a church of bones with this fascinating trip to the historical town of Kutná Hora. Founded in the 13th century, Kutná Hora was once the richest and most powerful city in Bohemia, famous for its silver mines. After suffering through war, fire and the exhaustion of the silver seams, Kutná Hora is once again celebrated as a Unesco World Heritage site for its beautiful architecture and historic importance, you will realize while walking through the historical centre of the town.

Marvel at the incredible St. Barbara Cathedral and the Bone Chapel, once a mint and royal residence, one of the most famous Gothic buildings in the world, built in honour of the patron saint of miners. Inside, gaze up at the vaulted ceiling and beautiful frescoes depicting medieval life in the town. Then visit the former royal mint which once coined Prague groschen, the hard currency of Central Europe at the time. Learn about the role Kutná Hora played in the economic life of the country, so much so that King Wenceslas IV had his royal residence here.

Then visit the Sedlec Ossuary - the Bone Chapel, where the entire interior is decorated with the bones of up to 70,000 people. Candelabras, chalices and coats of arms are just some of the eerie relics on display in this unique ossuary, which was constructed by a half-blind monk charged with exhuming the overflowing graveyard in the 14th century. There’s even a chandelier containing every bone in the human body. Make no bones about it, Kutná Hora’s magical old town atmosphere, stunning architecture and macabre history are a winning combination.
